Koson Ohara

1877-1945 | Japanese

A Japanese painter and printmaker, Ohara Koson was celebrated for his exquisite woodblock prints of birds, flowers, and animals, known as kacho-e. Working during the late Meiji to early Showa periods, he combined traditional Japanese aesthetics with a modern sense of composition and color. His delicate portrayals of nature — often depicting quiet, poetic moments — made him one of the leading figures of the shin-hanga (new prints) movement, which revitalized Japanese printmaking for a global audience.
