Who was Hilma af Klint?

Hilma af Klint was a pioneering Swedish artist and mystic whose radically abstract paintings predated those of more widely known modernists. Deeply influenced by spiritual philosophy and her involvement with the The Theosophical Society, as well as the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, she created large-scale, vividly symbolic works intended to visualise unseen spiritual realities. Believing her art would only be understood in the future, she stipulated that much of it remain hidden for decades after her death.
