Who was Maria Sibylla Merian?
Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717) was a German-born scientific illustrator and artist whose detailed studies of insects and plants transformed the understanding of metamorphosis. Merian travelled to Suriname in South America to study tropical species firsthand, publishing her groundbreaking book Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium in 1705. Today, she is regarded as one of the most important early scientific illustrators, whose work influenced both natural history and botanical art.
