Who was Gerda Wegener?
Gerda Wegener (1886–1940) was a Danish painter and illustrator associated with Art Deco and early twentieth-century modernism. Many of her most famous works featured her partner, Lili Elbe, one of the first known recipients of gender-affirming surgery, whom Wegener portrayed with warmth and sophistication. Today, she is recognised both for her distinctive decorative style and for the intimate artistic record she created of gender identity and modern life.
