Who was August Macke?

August Macke (1887–1914) was a German painter associated with Expressionism and a key member of the Der Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) group. Influenced by French Impressionism, Fauvism, and early Cubism, he created paintings that conveyed harmony and quiet joy with a distinctive, colourful style. Although his career was cut short when he was killed during the First World War, Macke produced a remarkable body of work that helped shape the development of modern art in Germany.
