Who was Max Beckmann?

Max Beckmann (1884–1950) was a German painter and printmaker whose work captured the psychological turbulence of the 20th century. After serving as a medical orderly during World War I, Beckmann experienced mental health issues that profoundly shaped his artistic direction. Branded a “degenerate artist” by the Nazi regime, he left Germany in 1937 for exile in Amsterdam before eventually settling in the United States, where he taught at the Washington University in St. Louis.
