Who was André Derain?

André Derain (1880–1954) was a pioneering French painter and one of the founders of Fauvism – the bold, colour-driven art movement that helped launch modern art. Best known for his expressive brushwork and radical use of colour, Derain rejected realistic tones in favour of intense, non-naturalistic palettes. When the Fauvists' paintings were first exhibited in Paris in 1905, critics mockingly called them les fauves ("the wild beasts") – a name that stuck and became the title of the movement.
